We all have stories about how our products and services have helped people and could help even more people, but in a sound byte world we need to quickly convey the benefits we provide. Personal Business Planning is based on the following values and guiding principles:
- Hard work is required to succeed. There is tough competition out there and increasingly there is no vendor loyalty. We need to always be increasing the value we provide to others.
- Passion and integrity are required to persuade. Otherwise, we might as well put on plaid jackets to warn our customers in advance of our ulterior motives.
- Keep ideas coming. In 1899 the head of the patent office said everything that could be invented had been invented. We all know the end of that story. A single idea can yet change the world.
- Have a system for cash generation. It provides boundaries for making decisions and provides a focus on what activities to keep doing.
- Keep improving the system. This identifies the activities to stop doing.
- We serve our customers; they don’t work for us. Clients and customers are not there to create a prosperous lifestyle for us. That is manipulative and self-serving. We work to create a better service, product, or result for them.
- Profitability is not optional. Whether a nonprofit or for-profit, we need to focus on marketing first and business execution second. This is sometimes against our nature but necessary to accelerate business visibility and maintain business viability.
